**PREMIA NEWSLETTER (ISSUE 3)** *Members' Spotlight: Dr. Shi Daming* Curious about how pattern recognition can be applied to handwriting recognition? How about to stock prediction? Or in computer guided surgery? Dr. Daming Shi investigates these and many other areas in the course of his research applying wavelet techniques and machine learning. Dr. Shi has been serving as an Assistant Professor in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) since 2002. He has held a guest professor appointment from Harbin Engineering University in China, and visiting professor appointment from the International University in Germany. His research interests include machine learning, neural network, pattern recognition, image processing, web search and mining. He is an outstanding and prolific researcher, authoring over 70 international, peer-reviewed publications in recent years. An exhaustive list of his expertise can be found from his publication page: Daming Shi obtained first Ph.D. in mechanical control from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in China, and his second Ph.D. in computer science from University of Southampton (So'ton) in United Kingdom. Dr. Shi is a senior member of the IEEE, chairing the technical committee on Intelligent Internet Systems, IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society. Learn more about Dr. Shi at his home page: *PREMIA President wins prestigious grant award* An NUS School of Computing (SoC) research project entitled "Document Information Mining for Digital Libraries" has clinched a prestigious grant from HP. Associate Professor Tan Chew Lim is the principle investigator (PI) of this project, which is expected to generate three main outcomes over 18 months: new techniques on document image analysis and information search, a document image search engine, and a full fledged educational resource portal. This course will cover some introductory materials on biometrics followed by special topics such as face recognition, fingerprint detection and voice detection, etc. Details about the time and venue will be announced at a later time. *PREMIA seminars* There will be two seminars coming up tentatively in July and October. In conjunction with our AGM in August, we are planning a members' night like last year with an invited talk followed by the AGM. Details will of the above events be announced in due course. *PREMIA WebLinks* To encourage members to make use of the PREMIA web site, we have created a section of WebLinks that list items of interests to members. * Books, Journals, Conferences, CFPs (16) * Datasets and Corpora (16) * Courses and talks (5) * Source Code (5) * Tools (7) We encourage you to submit links to sites that you know that would be interest to the community, at (currently available only to registered members) *PREMIA's Sponsorship of PRIB 2007* To promote its image as an active body in the IAPR society, PREMIA will provide a sponsorship to the coming PRIB 2007 to be held in Singapore on Oct 1-2, 2007. *Upcoming Asia/Pacific Rim IAPR conferences and events* [MVA 07]: 16-18 May 2007 Tokyo - 10th International Conference on Machine Vision Applications.
