SCHOOL OF ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING, Nanyang Technological University

Full-time Research Positions in Data Mining and Information Processing The School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering is offering full-time research positions to perform R&D in the field of Novelty Detection - a technological area based mainly on research in text and data mining, information processing, information retrieval, machine learning, and software engineering. The project will begin in May 2007 and is expected to last 2 years.  Preference will be given to individuals who can work for the entire duration of the project.

Rapid advances in Information Technology have enabled unprecedented access to masses of data for business decision-makers. The sheer volume of available information challenges the ability of organizations to act quickly in today's business environment. Thus, there is an increasing need for identifying new and relevant information out of a mass of incoming text documents.  This project will explore and implement techniques for novelty detection for text documents.  The project will also take into account the user's interest through analysis of the documents that he/she frequently accesses, in order to reflect the relevant yet novel documents. The research work involves implementing API modules in C++ to detect novel documents/sentences from incoming text data. The candidate is to research and develop algorithms to perform novelty detection and categorisation on text documents. The algorithms will be implemented in a Novelty Detection system.

Applicants with the following pre-requisites and skills are preferred:
*        A good degree (Bachelors or Masters) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
*        Good knowledge in data mining.
*        Good knowledge in software engineering/ programming.
*        Work experience in either machine learning, information retrieval, data modeling/analysis, or software engineering.
*        Strong interest in novelty detection and academic research.
*        Excellent communication skills and willing to work hard as a part of a team.
*        Strong technical background.
*        Experience in C/C++ and SQL.

Interested applicants are to send in their completed application form (download from http://www.ntu.edu.sg/hr/forms/Researchform.doc ) including a detailed CV with at least two references to the address below. Electronic submission of application is highly encouraged.
