The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. (http://www.noble.org) is a non-profit research institute with a vision to influence agriculture by exploring and improving production agriculture techniques and advancing plant science through research and discovery. The Foundation is one of the world's leaders in interpretation of the Medicago genome and in bioenergy crops including switchgrass, alfalfa and tall fescue. The Foundation has recently approved an initiative to make substantial investments to enhance its scientific computing and bioinformatics infrastructure. As a major part of the initiative, the lately established Scientific Computing Department has three immediate openings, namely a Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Specialist, a Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer, and a Scientific System & Data Management Specialist.

Position: Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Specialist

As a Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Specialist, the successful candidate will report to the Director of the Scientific Computing Department. The successful candidate will coordinate the daily operation of the department's scientific computing helpdesk in order to provide quality statistical and bioinformatics services to internal and external researchers. The successful candidate will also contribute to applied research in a teamed environment to enhance the Foundation's scientific computing infrastructure.

Principal Responsibilities:
1. Serve as the coordinator of the Scientific Computing Department helpdesk.
2. Provide statistical services on a daily basis, including experimental design, data sampling and analysis, and assist in statistical data interpretation.
3. Provide bioinformatics services to assist scientific problem solving in a broad range of research topics. Typical daily work includes custom data processing, sequence and functional genomics analysis, marker design etc.
4. Assist with grant applications and manuscript writing related to statistical and informatics components.
5. Write custom scripts and develop programs to enhance the department's helpdesk system and web service portal.
6. Contribute to applied research and develop statistical informatics methods to better address problems arising from clientele.

Minimum Qualifications:
1.M.S. degree in statistics with combined education and experience in bioinformatics. Applicants with education background in bioinformatics or related topics (e.g. mathematics and computer science) plus significant combined education and experience in statistics will also be considered.
2.2+ years of experience in a range of professional statistics such as data sampling, data analysis and application of statistical techniques to experimental design and real life systems.
3.Experience with statistical software such as SAS, R, STATA, MATLAB, JMP, XLSTAT, Pirouette, SIMPCA P, and publically available bioinformatics tools and databases, such as from NCBI, EBI and EMBL.
4.Experience in professional bioinformatics such as analyses of genomes and sequence data, phylogeny and evolution, gene expression profiles, proteins and metabolites, etc.
5.Independent problem solver that enjoys collaborative research.
6.Excellent communication and people skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
1.Ph.D. degree in statistics with combined education and experience in bioinformatics.
2.Experience in a user-centric and result-oriented setup, e.g. core facility or helpdesk.
3.Formal coursework or advanced training in one or more of the following: biology, biochemistry, plant science or agriculture.
4.Experience in plant molecular biology, genetics, agronomy, or agriculture.
5.Knowledge in scientific and statistical software development, e.g. implementation of statistical tests and computing algorithms using a mainstream programming language.

Position: Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer

As a Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer, the successful candidate will report to the Director of the Scientific Computing Department. The successful candidate will apply their scientific computing skills to biological problem solving, and to develop novel bioinformatics software and databases breast to various scientific projects. The candidate will also contribute to applied research in a teamed environment to enhance the Foundation's scientific computing infrastructure.

Principal Responsibilities:
1.Deploy, integrate and maintain publically available software and databases, and provide computational support of scientific projects.
2.Work in a team environment to design, implement and support novel software tools, web and database systems for scientific data analyses.
3.Assist with grant applications and manuscript writing by means of web server construction, custom program developments and high throughput data processing etc.
4.If time permits, conduct applied research and develop novel methods to enhance the institute's computational infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications:
1.M.S. degree in computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics or a closely related area.
2.Experience in UNIX/LINUX programming and at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, PHP, Perl and JAVA.
3.2+ years of experience in scientific software and large scale database system design and implementation.
4.A good understanding of biology basics, e.g. molecular biology, genetics, genomics and computational biology.

Preferred Qualifications:
1.Knowledge in computational algorithms such as clustering and classification, Bayesian models, graphics models, and kernel-based algorithms.
2.Knowledge and experience in low level algorithm implementation, such as data structures, ordered lists, trees and dynamical programming.
3.Knowledge and experience in web development using combination of techniques, e.g. DHTML, PHP, Java Script, SQL, AJAX and Ruby.

As a Scientific Systems & Data Management Specialist, the successful candidate will report to the Director of the Scientific Computing Department. The candidate will work in a teamed environment to design and manage the Foundation's scientific computing infrastructure, and to assist researchers' management of their daily scientific data.

Principal Responsibilities:
1.Work with the Information System department to design, deploy and manage the institute's scientific computing infrastructure, particularly in the software aspect, such as virtual servers, database servers, scientific software packages and software development environments.
2.Work with the Scientific System Administrator to deploy, customize and manage the institute's scientific data warehousing system. Immediate work will be to identify scientific researchers' data storage, management and sharing needs, develop strategies to satisfy such needs, and to evaluate and recommend commercial software system for this purpose.
3.Identify, deploy and customize commercial and publically available software for compliance with community data standards and data quality control.
4.Assist bioinformaticians and software developers in aspects of virtual servers and storage planning and allocation, database construction and administration, SQL query optimization etc.

Minimum Qualifications:
1.M.S. degree in computer science, computer engineering, information science, bioinformatics or a closely related area. B.S. applicants with 5+ years of closely related experience will also be considered.
2.Experience in large scale database and data management system applications and administration.
3.Experience in SQL language and low-level MySQL, Microsoft SQL server and Oracle SQL server administration, e.g. managing databases and users, incremental backup and hot synchronization.
4.Excellent communication skills and enjoy collaborative projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
1.Ph.D. degree in computer science, computer engineering, information science, bioinformatics or a closely related area.
2.Experience in UNIX/LINUX system administration and scripting.
3.Knowledge in technical aspects of enterprise data warehousing, e.g. process automation, heterogeneous data integration, data indexing and information retrieval.
4.A good understanding of biological community data standards, e.g. MIAME, MIAPE, MSI.
5.A good understanding of biology basics, e.g. molecular biology, genetics, genomics and computational biology.
6.A good understanding of knowledge discovery, knowledge management and knowledge sharing concepts and their implementations.
