The Foundation is one of the world's leaders in interpretation of the Medicago genome and in bioenergy crops including switchgrass, alfalfa and tall fescue. The Foundation has recently approved an initiative to make substantial investments to enhance its scientific computing and bioinformatics infrastructure. As a major part of the initiative, the lately established Scientific Computing Department has three immediate openings, namely a Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Specialist, a Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer, and a Scientific System & Data Management Specialist. As a Scientific Data Analyst & Programmer, the successful candidate will report to the Director of the Scientific Computing Department. The successful candidate will apply their scientific computing skills to biological problem solving, and to develop novel bioinformatics software and databases breast to various scientific projects. The candidate will also contribute to applied research in a teamed environment to enhance the Foundation's scientific computing infrastructure. Principal Responsibilities: 1.Deploy, integrate and maintain publically available software and databases, and provide computational support of scientific projects. 2.Work in a team environment to design, implement and support novel software tools, web and database systems for scientific data analyses. 3.Assist with grant applications and manuscript writing by means of web server construction, custom program developments and high throughput data processing etc. 4.If time permits, conduct applied research and develop novel methods to enhance the institute's computational infrastructure. Minimum Qualifications: 1.M.S. degree in computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics or a closely related area. 2.Experience in UNIX/LINUX programming and at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, PHP, Perl and JAVA. 3.2+ years of experience in scientific software and large scale database system design and implementation. 4.A good understanding of biology basics, e.g. molecular biology, genetics, genomics and computational biology. Preferred Qualifications: 1.Knowledge in computational algorithms such as clustering and classification, Bayesian models, graphics models, and kernel-based algorithms. 2.Knowledge and experience in low level algorithm implementation, such as data structures, ordered lists, trees and dynamical programming. 3.Knowledge and experience in web development using combination of techniques, e.g. DHTML, PHP, Java Script, SQL, AJAX and Ruby.
